The Lobe Rangers
Hear from The Lobe Rangers, a group of Iowa farmers that have recently become a You Tube sensation. They are changing the way they farm. Made up of 2 multiple generation farmers and newly established farmer with experiences that include Farm Bureau Leadership, they are hoping to make an impact on water quality.
Iowa is in a big hot mess when it comes to water quality. Their cancer rates are skyrocketing, their rivers and lakes are forever green and their rural wells and municipal water systems are overridden with nitrates.
Using strategies like no till, strip till, waterway development, buffer trips and cover crops they focus on water quality while maintaining yields and costs. In addition, they hope to change policies so that Iowa can meet the Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy goals.
“What I’ve found with no till and strip till is; better water infiltration, less passes across the field, less machinery ownership, less fuel costs, less maintenance and our yields have not suffered a bit. They stay consistent, maybe a little better when I compare with other farmer’s fields.”
